Bringing to Light

Adventures in Geology and Art

An exhibition by Ian Patience

A boy is exploring on a Northumberland beach.  He picks up a pebble, turns it over in his hand and pops it into his bucket. Later, he carefully sorts his pebbles and invites us to view his treasure. Is he a geologist or an artist?

Ian Patience studies and paints the rocks that underlie some of Northumberland’s most magnificent landscapes. Under his microscope, the rock’s hidden minerals are quite literally brought to light, revealing their breathtaking complexity and strange beauty.

His powerful paintings invite us to adventure with him into the world that lies within the humble pebble, as well as bringing to light something hidden and imaginative in ourselves.

‘Bringing to Light’ celebrates the meeting of the science of geology with the art of painting … and a boy’s love of pebbles.
