Have you ever held a second hand book in your hands and wondered about who used to own it and how it came to be there? While tidying up the baskets of books for our Wonderful World of Ladybird Books Artists exhibition, I became fascinated by the many stories these books have to tell about their former owners.
Many of the books that were available to browse in our displays featured dedications to the lucky children they were gifted to as a Birthday or Christmas presents to be cherished for many years. Some were used in School libraries to encourage reading and education, and others were used in Children’s Wards to provide joy and respite from difficult times. It has become very clear to me that the stories of Ladybird books are as varied as those that they tell.
We had many happy visitors reminiscing their own childhood books with us over the course of this exhibition. It is great to see that these stories still resonate with so many people all these years later.
Our Wonderful World of Ladybird Books Artists exhibition runs until the 5th of November 2023, but it will be replaced by many other fascinating exhibitions which I’m sure will come with their own story.
See you soon !
