The Magna Carta Barons

This is the first and only book to tell the story of the 25 Magna Carta Barons: who they were, what they did, what happened to them after Magna Carta was issued in June 1215. One of particular interest is Richard de Percy, second son of Agness, heiress of the original Percy family of Alnwick Castle fame. There are, however 24 other fascinating stories to be told, each well-documented and illustrated in colour.

Chosen by the rebel army at Runnymede to guarantee King John’s compliance to the terms of the charter, these were all powerful men with extensive lands. Many were direct descendants of the Normans who had accompanied William the Conqueror a few generations before. It was their fight for the fundamental principle that everyone is subject to the rule of law that laid the basis for the democracy we enjoy today in the United Kingdom, the United States and other free nations.
