Visits to the seaside for health reasons had been a ritual that Georgian upper classes only participated in. As time went on and travel became easier, however-especially after the advent of the railways- the popularity of resorts along the south, west and east sides of Britain took off.
The working classes went on day trips from the factory towns to resorts like Blackpool and Scarborough. Wealthier people went for a week in the summer, staying in hotels or guest houses in more “select” locations like Torquay and Brighton. To attract visitors, lots of seaside towns built piers out into the sea. People enjoyed strolling along them to breathe in the fresh, healthy sea air. This trend boomed between the Wars, and continued after WW2 until foreign travel became accessible to the general population.
With increasing difficulties in air travel, security concerns and a warming UK climate, there is evidence that the trend for UK holidays, mainly based on short-stay, is returning.
