Join us on International Women’s Day 2025, as we celebrate Great Northern Women with writer and broadcaster Kate Fox.

Uncover the hidden history of the writers, scientists, athletes, politicians, protestors, musicians, innovators, activists and other heroes who represent the grit, determination and spirit of the North’s women. Women you might have heard of include Britain’s first astronaut Helen Sharman, the first female speaker of the House of Commons, Betty Boothroyd and music hall star the inimitable Hylda Baker. Women you may not have heard of include Liverpool’s Hilda James who introduced the front crawl to the UK, Lilian Bader, one of the first Black women in the RAF and “Red Ellen” Wilkinson the MP who led the Jarrow March!

In sections from her sell out show ‘Where There’s Muck There’s Bras’ and readings from her book (published by Harper North), stand up poet and Radio 4 regular Kate Fox asks who gets remembered and why (and why not)! She’ll be joined by participants from an afternoon writing workshop sharing their own words about the Northern women who have inspired them.

Bio: Kate Fox is a stand-up poet, spoken word artist and broadcaster. She is a regular contributor to Radio 4’s spoken word cabaret “The Verb”, has made two comedy series for Radio 4, been Poet in Residence for the Glastonbury Festival and the Great North Run and completed a PhD in stand-up comedy.

She is the author of “Where There’s Muck There’s Bras: True Stories of the North of England’s Women” published by Harper North, and poetry collections including “On Sycamore Gap” (Harper North, 2024), “Bigger On the Inside” (Smokestack Books, 2024) and “The Oscillations” (Nine Arches Press, 2021). She is also a neurodivergent advocate whose latest show “Bigger on the Inside” explores neurodiversity through the lens of Doctor Who.
