This is one of a series of tea towels, all featuring interesting posters by famous former Alnwick resident William Davison. Besides being a qualified pharmacist, Davison was described (by Charles Hindley) as ” by far the most enterprising printer that had settled in the North of England”.
Davison’s print works in the centre of Alnwick though the early 1800’s produced not just posters and commercial bill heads, but also school books, children’s books, guidebooks and a newspaper still in existence. He was responsible for what was probably the world’s first partwork bible. He was also well-known for the use of attractive woodblock designs within all his output, such as the beautiful boat illustration on the Farn Islands tea towel.
These tea towels would make an ideal gift. In times of sky-high electricity they would also be an attractive way to encourage yourself and your family and friends to return to the traditional method of washing up instead of a dishwasher costly in energy and water.
