Jo Hume

The first lockdown brought a dramatic close to life as a practicing artist. Suddenly there was ‘nothing’ and all future exhibitions were cancelled. The paralysis lasted three weeks. But, frightening as it was lockdown brought an end to all responsibilities and with it came a sense of artistic freedom and an opportunity to experiment and explore abstraction. Art has a powerful connection with inner emotional and psychological life. In retrospect, I can see how the feelings of space, isolation, separation, fear and hope were unconsciously connected to walking the wonderful beaches and hills of Northumberland which, together with my garden, and a visit to the delightful St Abbs, became the subject of some of the work you see here.
