Vikings and Northumbrians: In bed with the enemy

Wednesday 6th May 7pm

As part of the celebration of  our summer exhibition, Vikings: Fact and Fiction, Bailiffgate has invited Max Adams, critically acclaimed author, archaeologist, biographer and traveler to deliver an exclusive talk.  Max will be telling the story of the Northumbrian experience of the Viking Age at Bailiffgate Museum & Gallery in Alnwick on 6th May at 7pm.

On the Galley Floor, next to the ghost of a Viking longboat, Max will deliver his talk surrounded by 1,000 year-old artefacts loaned by the JORVIK Group, the people behind JORVIK Viking Centre in York.

The Northumbrian experience of the Viking Age was, to say the least, mixed.  Predatory raiders abducted monks from holy places.  Pagan kings set themselves up in the North and challenged the dominance of Northumbria’s traditional rulers.  The natives – kings and queens, priests and nuns, noble men and women, farmers and their families had to adapt to survive.  Max Adams tells their dramatic story: how native and foreigner merged into a new, hybrid, vibrant society.

Max says “’The Vikings may seem like aliens; but they were, like us, figures in a landscape; and to share a northern perspective on their fortunes in the heart of Northumbria’s ancient landscape, surrounded by their artefacts, is a special treat.’

Jane Mann, volunteer at Bailffgate says “Max is an exciting and skilled story teller who brings the Viking Age to life.   Using recent archaeological research and an extensive knowledge of his subject he throws new light on a time of political and cultural upheaval for Northumberland.  I can’t wait to settle down with a glass of wine and be transported back 1,000 years.’

Max will be available after the talk to sign books and discuss with members of the audience.  Book early to secure a place.
