I enjoyed the first lockdown because it gave nature the chance to say ‘hey, listen, we are here, doing our best, despite your best endeavours to make our lives hard. For once, give us the chance to shine’. I missed, though, the chance to walk in the Cheviots. A place I have always found inspirational, walking there with friends, come rain or shine. Most of my paintings try to do justice to the beauty and peace of these hills. I want to show how the sky and earth come together, often colliding, as storms ride in over the horizon.

As a southerner, the Cheviots, and the Scottish Highlands, are the places I love best in this, our unravelling kingdom.
