I returned to art in retirement and consider myself to be primarily a digital artist. I use Procreate software with an Apple Pencil on an iPad Pro. I have found it difficult in the pandemic to commit to producing anything and engage better in the company of others.
The subjects I have often turned to seem to be themes with some emotional ‘charge’ for me; a longing perhaps for times past and a more affirmative kind of life experience.
In an email exchange with me, Jo (Hume) made the point that making art is a kind of journey. It is, Jo wrote, as though each piece may move one towards a place one longs for but that the conscious mind can’t quite reach. I find this thought a real encouragement as I continue to explore the links between art and our inner worlds. It’s a heady mix: art, music, writing, philosophy, spirituality and mathematics. I think this is the first time in my life when I have had the opportunity and the good sense to slow down and savour the depths of it all.
