One of the questions we occasionally get asked by visitors is 'What was the very first artefact' in Bailiffgate Museum collection?'

This is it.    A ceramic footwarmer!

They were used by better-off railway passengers in the days before heated trains. Filled with hot water on departure their flattened base meant that they could be placed on the floor and the passenger could rest their feet on them.

This example is probably Edwardian but they were in use until after the second world war. Some railway companies provided them for first class passengers in which case they would have the railway company's name on them.

Don't think they provide these on Virgin now ?
