Contemporary Boro- Japanese Art in Stitching Course

Traditional Japanese boro cloths have a beauty like no other. Each cloth tells a unique story of its journey through life with patches carefully sewed on and reinforced with stitching, often over generations of a single family.

Boro is the antidote to the fast fashion world. The cloths can be viewed to embrace the concept of 'wabi sabi', that sees beauty in an object's impermanence and imperfection.

Making a feature of garment repairs is an alternative to the art of invisible mending. Taking the time to create something really unique is a beautiful way of connecting with a garment or textile, and because mistakes and wonky stitching can be embraced it's the perfect project for beginner sewers.

Tutor Gillian Arkley will reference the "Make Do and Mend" of traditional Japanese Boro and course participants will be using colourful fragments of silk kimono to patch a collage using a darning stitch.  Materials cost £5 on the day.

Please bring a thimble is you use one, and a few favourite embroidery threads if you wish.

NB Please book asap. There are two course date options so please select the one you would prefer. Saturday 6th October or Monday 15th Oct.  Both run from 10.30 am to 3pm (with breaks!)

The Course costs £35.

The £10 (towards that amount) deposit required now to secure your place is refundable if the course is unable to run for any reason on either day, although you may be offered the opportunity to transfer to the other date if so.
